Thank you for doing this with us! Before we dig in, our readers would like to learn a bit more about you. Can you tell us the “backstory” about what brought you to this career path?

My pleasure, thanks for inviting me. I’ve spent more than 25 years selling Creativity. My new book is based on all of that experience. My route into sales was a very traditional one. I had a job with an IT and office equipment company. Whilst it wasn’t my calling in life I learnt a lot and it gave me the core skills and training I needed. However, I quickly realised I wanted to do something more creative and I’ve spent most of career in that industry. Either working in music, film or with creative agencies.

There are too many to mention but a few stand out. Firstly the power of showing up. To whatever it is your doing. 80% of success is based on showing up. The other 20% is a combination of luck, skill and timing.

Lastly be prepared as much as possible. My worst ever pitch was a face-to-face pitch presentation and right before the meeting my laptop died. I had no option but to go in and do the meeting without any backup. It was awful! Needless to say we didn’t win the project.

Are you working on any exciting new projects now? How do you think that will help people?

I’ve just finished my new book and we are out promoting that at the moment. Selling Creativity is out now and a guide for agencies and creatives to grow their business through the art of sales. It would also apply to most industries or businesses who want to learn more about the art of sales.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

I’ve worked with some great people over the years, many of whom have been inspirational and brilliant mentors. Pete Stevenson and Phil Blundell at The Edge Picture Company deserve a mention. As do Gary Fitzpatrick and Angela Law for giving me my break into the industry.

Dave Holley also gave me my first job in the music industry, as Head of Business Development at Abbey Road Studios when I was just 27. Absolutely my dream job at the time and an incredible place to be a part of for a few years.

For the benefit of our readers, can you tell us a bit why you are an authority on the topic of sales?

Well I’ve spent over 25 years doing it. To date I’ve sold over £30M worth of creative services, films and content for my clients which averages at £1M per year. I’ve had lots of success with sales but also lots of failures along the way. That teaches you lots of lessons and how to improve. I decided to write the book to bring together all of that experience and knowledge in one place.

Ok. Thanks for all that. Let’s now jump to the main core of our interview. As you know, nearly any business a person will enter, will involve some form of sales. At the same time, most people have never received any formal education about how to be effective at selling. Why do you think our education system teaches nearly every other arcane subject, but sales, one of the most useful and versatile topics, is totally ignored?

Well firstly, most education systems are flawed anyway and rapidly becoming out of date. We really don’t tend to think of sales in a very positive way. In the book there is a chapter called Sales needs a Rebrand. We need to reframe the way we see it in a more positive light. The negative stereotypical view has taken hold over many decades. Therefore sales is not held in the same high regard as a lawyer, banker or a doctor. Which is a shame because if you think about the business, and economic contribution great sales people make, it’s huge! Literally billions of dollars around the world every day, contributing to people’s livelihoods. Yet we still think it is a negative thing. Madness.

This discussion, entitled, “How To Be Great At Sales Without Seeming Salesy”, is making an assumption that seeming salesy or pushy is something to be avoided. Do you agree with this assumption? Whether yes, or no, can you articulate why you feel the way you do?

I do, yes. Great sales people are never salesy and they are never, ever pushy. It’s simply not part of what we do or how things work. Sales is essentially about trying to understand people first and foremost. Do their needs align with you or your business? Forget trying to sell people something and just try to talking to them for a while. That’s the way you build rapport and interest that will then lead to sales.

The seven stages of a sales cycle are usually broken down to versions of Prospecting, Preparation, Approach, Presentation, Handling objections, Closing, and Follow-up. Which stage do you feel that you are best at? What is your unique approach, your “secret sauce”, to that particular skill? Can you explain or give a story?

Well those are all key parts of the process and I am comfortable with each one. You sometimes have to prioritise different areas at any one time. For example, we spend a lot of time prospecting (or qualifying) because we only want to engage people who are right and likely to buy. You can lose so much time if you don’t do this key step. I also love the presentation side (or pitch) as that is where the creative ideas are usually shared and it’s often make or break time!

Lead generation, or prospecting, is one of the basic steps of the sales cycle. Obviously, every industry will be different, but can you share some of the fundamental strategies you use to generate good, qualified leads?

Lead generation is where it all starts. Without any leads you don’t have any sales and so it’s pretty crucial to get right! It has changed significantly in the last few years. When I started selling most of it was done on the phone. Now almost none of it is done on the phone! There are many tools and pieces of tech that can help you generate more inbound leads. The key is to develop a plan and method for a regular consistent stream of enquiries of potential customers.

In my experience, I think the final stages of Handling Objections, Closing, and Follow-up, are the most difficult parts for many people. Why do you think ‘Handling Objections’ is so hard for people? What would you recommend for one to do, to be better at ‘Handling Objections’?

I have a simple answer. Ask more questions… at the start. You do not want to get into a situation where you have done all of the work, at your expense, only to lose the project and be faced with a barrage of objections. The more you can clarify upfront what it is the client is looking to achieve and have the conversation, the more successful you will be.

‘Closing’ is of course the proverbial Holy Grail. Can you suggest 5 things one can do to successfully close a sale without being perceived as pushy?

Timing is everything in sales. Go too hard, too early and you’ll lose. Too late and the moment has passed. You’ve got to find the right balance between proactivity and giving people space.

I always like to ask at the outset, what have we got to do to win the business? That question usually gets a great reaction and gives you the information you need to know.

As you know there are so many modes of communication today. For example, In-person, phone calls, video calls, emails, and text messages. In your opinion, which of these communication methods should be avoided when attempting to close a sale or follow up? Which are the best ones? Can you explain or give a story?

All of them! They are key tools in your toolkit of methods that you can use to engage customers. Knowing when and how to deploy is down to your judgment of the situation. Most people will not meet face to face anymore, so you have to build up to that via calls, emails and video calls. However, there is no substitute for being sat in a room with your clients so always be on the lookout for those opportunities. Overall, try to keep as much control of the process as possible. Always have something going in the diary for you and the client to engage.

Ok, we are nearly done. Here is our final “meaty” question. You are a person of enormous influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the greatest amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger.

Creativity can solve almost any problem. There are a lot of problems that need solving in the world right now. So I’d like to inspire more people to tap into the inherent creativity that everyone has at some level. Then channel that creative energy into solving problems and having fun, whether in business or their personal life. After all Albert Einstein famously said “creativity is intelligence having fun”.

How can our readers follow you online?

Sales needs a rebrand in the creative industry. Too often it’s overlooked and seen as the poor relation to the creative function within agencies. It shouldn’t be this way.

Incredibly, the UK’s world beating creative sector contributes £13M every hour to the economy. Yet, so many creative businesses and agencies still struggle to find consistent sales and growth. How can creatives rapidly grow their business?

A lot of creative agencies are unable to find regular and steady sales. They can achieve some short-term wins but then often get distracted whilst delivering those projects, only to find at the end of the process they haven’t got any new work.

Or, they try to do all of the selling themselves but instead find they get bogged down and distracted by the day-to-day running of their business. Many agencies focus heavily on the creative side and less on the sales side. Creatives, then, have a big problem with growth.

It needn’t be like this. There is a New Way, for New Business.

As we begin a new business year are there things that your agency could be doing to finally grow in a meaningful way?

It’s a challenge for small agencies to access the breadth of specialist skills required. Arguably, the perfect skills model doesn’t exist in-house for agencies with 50 or less staff. These are the reasons The Client Key have developed A New Way, for New Business.

The new way is proven, simple, lean and cost effective. The skill set of a full team, for less than the expense of an old school sales director. So you get experience, knowledge and expert skills across each core sales function. We are specialists within the creative agency sector. The Client Key helps you ‘uber-ise’ new business in your agency. Eg, faster, better, cheaper and with results that deliver sales.

If any of this resonates with you then please do get in touch. We’ll be running Rapid Growth workshops throughout January to help small agencies thrive in 2023. We’d love to hear from you.

Most agencies start conversations with clients by talking about the things they deliver. E.g. film, advertising, events, digital marketing, PR etc. It’s a habit that’s very easy to fall into and on occasion we all do it.

However, fundamentally, clients do not buy you for the things you deliver. They don’t even necessarily need these things! Creative services are out there in abundance, they are everywhere. All the client has to do is reach out and pick the nearest company that comes to mind, top of their google search or whoever gets in touch with them at the right moment. There are many, many agencies all vying for the same business.

So then, how do you compete?

The reasons someone will pick you over the competition are purely down to the value you bring them and the problems you can help them solve. That’s it. All client buying decisions are based on those factors.

When you shift the conversation more towards value and specifically the true value you offer people, there is a huge shift in the power of these conversations.

So, armed with this information how exactly do you communicate that value? How can you position yourselves in the minds of your clients as the right and only solution for them?

This is where a campaign driven approach to business development comes in. When you focus on two or three key areas of expertise that you offer and are able to communicate those clearly at scale – then you will start to get noticed.

This means giving away some of your time and even more of your value. That might sound counterintuitive but it is not. Because when you start to be of use, of value and of genuine interest to people, then suddenly they want more. Crucially they’ll be prepared to pay for it. So, campaign driven business development is one of the most effective things you can do to grow as an agency.

It will help you to stand out and scale up. Rapidly.

Interested in finding out more about campaign driven agency growth? Book one of our ‘Rapid Growth’ workshops by getting in touch, we’d love to hear from you.

The topic of the session was “New Year, New Business, A New Way”, hitting the ground running with solutions to real life business development issues and setting 2022 off to a successful start!

We tackled real world agency growth challenges and worked through them to give attendees suggestions to implement in their business. It was great to bring people together into a physical space again, something we have all missed hugely over the last 2 years!

Ending with a glass of wine and an opportunity to network with fellow attendees, the session was a massive success. We plan to keep this momentum going throughout the year with more physical workshops for agencies.

We are currently running an ongoing workshop called ‘Rapid Growth for Creative Agencies’. This is a free to attend digital workshop tailored to your business, providing you with practical tools to implement into your own agency.

Interested in finding out more? Get in contact with us, we’d love to hear from you…

The Client Key supports many creative agencies with their overseas representation and business development. Here’s the good news: it is now easier than ever for small to mid-sized creative agencies to expand and start working internationally.

Yes there are some short term challenges in terms of Covid restrictions but they won’t be there forever.

The barriers to entry are lower than ever before and agencies can open in new markets with minimal costs and time investment. In this article we are going to look at some of the ways we can support your agency internationally, helping you establish new clients and setting up offices in international locations.

Understanding your market: Picking the right market is critical. There is no point trying to be in several locations at the same time, unless you have the size and scale to make this a reality. It is better to understand and focus on one market first.

Focus on the Mega Projects: There are a huge number of mega projects in the world that drive business for creative agencies. Whether it’s sporting events such as The World Cup or cultural events such as Expo 2020. I visited Expo last week for a client and the sheer scale of creativity is incredible. Many of our clients have won business in the preceding years running up to these events. The next World Cup and Expo are already being planned. What could your agency do to target business in these (and other) mega projects?

Cultural Differences: Each market has it’s own specific differences and nuances that must be understood. Winning business in New York or North America is a very different process to doing it in Dubai or The Gulf! Spending time getting up to speed on the sensitivities and cultural details will stand you in good stead. Things don’t happen overnight either. A long term and patient approach is required, which takes a committed board or agency owner(s) to see things through.

Growth plan: When going into any new market you will need a clear plan for growth. What are the steps you need to take to secure business? How can you do it in an effective and lean way? Most SME creative agencies do not have FTSE 100 budgets when it comes to international expansion! I have watched many agencies burn through 2 years worth of business class travel, to China for example, with precisely zero to show for it at the end. Getting bang for your buck and spending carefully is essential.

Foundation clients: Ideally, having 2-3 foundation clients can help provide a springboard into new markets. Those can usually be won from base camp – before you take the plunge and invest significant sums in travel and a new office. This is a very effective strategy that has worked for lots of our agencies.

On the ground network: Build your on the ground network as quickly as you can. Get to know the key players and major prospects in a specific city you may be targeting. There are lots of resources via British Embassy teams and the DIT (Department for International Trade). There is a well developed infrastructure on the ground, all over the world, to help you. Tap into those services and get to know people locally.

Office: This will probably be the final stage in the process, taking the plunge and opening an office. It may take a while to get to this point, if you build up business and your client roster beforehand. Being able to say “we have an office here” or “we’re about to open an office here” is a very powerful signal to prospective clients and it goes down very well. A satellite office with a simple presence can often be enough to start with.

In summary, there has never been a better time for SME’s and agencies to expand abroad. The technology is there to support you and there are less barriers to overcome. The political and economic link between many countries and the UK are a major focus on government agendas. Markets such as North America, The Middle East and The Far East are all very hot for creative companies.

The UK creative sector is revered around the globe. Whether in music, arts, fashion, film, events or createtech it’s one of the things we do best. Now is the time to take your creativity out there to the world!

Rob King – The Client key: A new way, for new business

There are many misconceptions on the best ways to grow agencies and creative businesses. Most of them are inaccurate and very unhelpful for small to mid-sized agency owners.

The Client Key has decades of experience in successfully growing agencies, production companies and creative organisations. So, in this article, we’re going to share some of our core ‘truths’ in agency new business.

We hope that you’ll find them useful and relevant to your agency!

1) Strategy is paramount

Do you have a new business plan? Where is your next client coming from? How does your sales team operate? Not having a clearly defined road map for growth will slow you down hugely. Most agencies try to do things organically without a clear process and rigorous implementation of the new business function.

2) You need rainmakers

Rainmakers are the people who consistently win you business. They genuinely know how to engage clients and do whatever it takes to get them over the line. They operate instinctively and it’s in their DNA. Sales and new business comes naturally to them, and often without any formal training – they just know how to do it. Who are the real rainmakers in your business and have you got enough of them? Do you celebrate and reward them? Does everything fall squarely on their shoulders, or do you help them share the load?

3) Your brand proposition alone will not win you business

There are many people who believe in ‘win without pitching’ via a well-defined brand proposition. Namely, that if you communicate your agency value well enough, clients will automatically choose you without a pitch. Very, very rarely is this ever true. This single thing will not win you business. Yes, it’s important to have a clear and well defined brand proposition, that clients engage with. But forget the idea that on its own this will win you work – it won’t! Very rarely do clients ever single source major pieces of business without entertaining some kind of pitch. So…

4) Get good at pitching

Pitching is not a dirty word and ‘win without pitching’ is dead. Clients are duty bound to carry out their due diligence and entertain multiple conversations before placing a significant piece of business. They might know who they want to work with but 95% of the time they still have to run a pitch. Successful pitching is an art form in itself. So, get good at it! Learn what their major success factors are before you say yes. Learning how to pitch more effectively is the one of the single most important things you can do to grow your agency.

How to pitch!

5) New Business is the only building block for success

This is what separates the great from the good. The ability to put new business and sales at the heart of your organisation. It’s not great creative work (although yes, of course, that’s vital) it’s your ability to go out and sell that creative work. When you can embed this idea, across everything you do, your agency will grow, very rapidly.

6) Your clients might be further away than you think

Creativity is in demand all over the globe. The UK creative sector is among the best in the world. Through technology it is now easier than ever before to work with international clients. Are you doing this in your agency? How can you open up new clients in different markets more effectively?

Finding new international clients

7) There is ‘A New way, for New business’

You are operating in a very crowded marketplace so your ability to stand out and differentiate is vital. The Client Key helps businesses operate a new, more effective, way for sales and new business. Gone are the days of ineffectively trying to do this solely in-house. Our model is the ‘uberfication’ of the biz dev function. Proven and effective that generates results.

Let us know what you think about our agency growth truths! We’d love to hear from you.
